I LOVE mason jar crafts. I think it’s because mason jars are a perfect canvas for just about anything once you know how to prep them for crafting. One of my favorite things to do with mason jars is to turn them into cute pen and pencil holders like these animal themed jars. Since I love rainbows, I thought it would be fun to paint a colorful fruit theme for this mason jar craft. Fruit Mason Jar Craft Supplies (affiliate links provided for your convenience):
- Mason Jars – I use these 16oz mason jars because there’s a logo only on one side which leaves the other sides blank and perfect for decorating.
- White Primer – This is my favorite primer because it’s a flat primer and paint in one.
- Acrylic Paint – I like Mont Marte acrylic paint and Liquitex Basics acrylic paint and Artists Loft
- Paint Markers – If you don’t have paint markers yet, I highly recommend these extra fine point markers. I use them all the time on rocks, wood and more. They are perfect for details on mason jar crafts like this one.
- Brushes – I like both foam paint brushes and flat paint brushes for covering mason jars with paint.
- Sealant (optional) – I often use this matte spray sealant or this gloss spray sealant depending on if I want shine or a matte finish.
Fruit Mason Jar Craft Directions:
- Step 1: Place mason jars mouth down on top of a piece of cardboard and spray evenly with a the flat white primer.Â
- Step 2: Sketch out the more complicated designs for the orange and kiwi using a pencil.Â
- Step 3: Cover the jars with acrylic paint. You might need 2-3 layers of paint depending on the paint thickness.
- Step 4: Use a pencil to lightly sketch the placement of the faces and other details.Â
- Step 5: Go over the pencil sketches with paint markers. For the paint markers be sure to shake them well before using and always test them first on a piece of paper.Â
- Step 6 (optional): Honestly I don’t always seal my mason jars, but if you do, it can help protect against fading and chipping. You just need to decide if you want a matte or gloss spray sealant.

These are so sweet, I think the kiwi ? is my favourite.
Yay! So glad you like them and I agree, Mr. Kiwi is pretty darn cute.
These are adorable! I love the little faces!
I love the colors you put on these. And yah, I like the Kiwi one too. Did you have to cut open the seal of those mason jars?
No cutting required! The mason jars I use has 2-piece lids. I put a link in the post 🙂
