How to Make a Watercolor Mandala Background Using Tombow Brush Pens

Did you know that you can easily turn Tombow Dual Brush Pens into watercolors by simply adding water? While there are a few different ways to make watercolor backgrounds using Tombow brush pens, I’m going to show you one of my favorite ways to make a watercolor mandala background using Tombow brush pens and all you need is a water bottle and sheet protector.Watercolor Mandala Background Supplies (affiliate links provided for your convenience):
- Tombow Dual Brush Pens Galaxy Set – I used the colors in the Tombow galaxy set but Tombow also makes a ton of other brush pen sets, including the Tombow full line of 96 colors which I have and love!
- Sheet protector
- Watercolor Paper
- Spray bottle or mist spray bottle
- Gold Paint pen or black fine liner pens – for this example I used a gold paint pen, but I also love the look of the black fine liners over watercolor backgrounds.
Watercolor Mandala Background Directions:

- Step 1: Start with your first color and color in a section of the sheet protector.Â
- Step 2: Add each additional color underneath.
- Step 3: Lightly spray water over the sheet protector.Â
- Step 4: Flip the sheet protector over on top of a piece of watercolor paper and spread the water around.
- Step 5: Keep spreading until their is little to no white space left between the colors.Â
- Step 6: Slowly peel the sheet protector away from the watercolor paper.Â
- Step 7: Use a gold paint pen or black fine liner to draw a doodle or mandala.Â
