Learning School Christmas Tree

Sometimes learning at home can be difficult for both kids and parents. Whether it’s doing homework, home schooling, or remote learning, it’s important to create a fun and inviting environment. My friend Nadia Colucci is an expert when it comes to decorating Christmas trees for all holidays, not just Christmas, so when we started talking about how we could make learning at home an inspiring and interactive experience it was a no-brainer…we had to make a Learning School Christmas Tree.

Learning School Christmas Tree

Our Learning Tree is like an extension of the classroom. Beyond just being a unique way to incorporate different educational themes and lessons, a learning school Christmas tree is also a great way to display finished projects and completed work. I like to think that the learning tree is the new bulletin board. It’s just like the decorative boards that teachers use in the classroom to display work and themes throughout the year.

How to Make a Learning Themed Christmas Tree for Your Home or Classroom

It’s easy to make a learning tree interactive. Add quiz questions, learning facts and more using notecards, dry erase boards and flashcards that can easily be removed and placed back on the tree. See below for a list of ideas and supplies.

Supplies for Learning Tree School Christmas Tree

  • Artificial Christmas Tree – If you want something that takes up less space, here is a smaller tree option.
  • School Themed Garland – here’s another great option.
  • Pencil Cutouts – Great for writing down math problems, quiz questions, etc.
  • Dry Erase Index Cards – Another great option for lesson learning questions. Love that they are reusable! Just hole punch at the top and add a string tor easily hang on the tree.
  • School Bus Tree Topper – We drilled a hole in the bottom of the school bus to turn it into a tree topper.
  • Other Tree Fillers (the Dollar Store is a great place for tree fillers)
    • Crayon boxes (these are great filler, just remove the crayons to make them easier to hang)
    • Mini scissors
    • Mini composition notebooks (just tear off the cover, hole punch and hang).
    • Cut-outs for writing math problems, letters, etc: star cut outs and burst cut outs.

There’s a simple whiteboard (the dollar store has them!) on this learning Christmas tree that can be used to ask questions. You could easily adjust to your child’s age, too. For preschoolers, do a letter of the day. For younger elementary kids, practice sight words. Older kids can be asked a variety of questions!

Or if you want a break from learning, add a joke or riddle instead.

A lot of the decorations are actually learning and classroom supplies from the dollar store.

Other Ways to Make Learning at Home Fun

School Supplies Mason Jars

Use this tutorial to make your own set of school supplies mason jars. They make for very fun storage and you can even use plastic jars to keep them unbreakable.

Treasure Chest

Create a reward system and fill a treasure chest with items that your kids will be excited about working to achieve.

Maps

Add maps to the surrounding tree area to add more enrichment and learning.

Educational Posters

You can choose different themes and posters based on the grade level and lessons.

Base of the learning themed tree

The best part about creating a school learning tree is that the kids aren’t just learning, but they are involved in the entire set-up process and creation of the actual tree and materials that are used. You know how everyone gets excited at christmas time when it’s time to decorate and how fun it is to pull out each ornament, well this is just like that except the kids are learning as they are decorating. This is such a great way to keep the kids busy, while also being productive and learning at the same time.
